Role in the ISU ADVANCE Program
Dr. Vela is Equity Advisor for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). In this capacity, he chairs the LAS Diversity Committee, and represents the LAS College within the University's ADVANCE and Diversity committees (the latter in conjunction with LAS colleague Der Vang). Dr. Vela also represents the Faculty and Staff Affinity Council within the Work/Life Advisory Committee, and serves on the ISU Strategic Plan Campus Environment Sub-committee.
Dr. Javier Vela is a synthetic inorganic and materials chemist who specializes in the development of new optical nanomaterials, heterostructures and their devices for applications in catalysis, energy conversion, and biological imaging. He currently leads a research group consisting of six graduate (PhD) students, one AGEP postdoctoral fellow, and two undergraduates. For his work, Dr. Vela has received the ACS Inorganic Young Investigator Award in 2006, was named Top 40 Under 40 by Hispanic Engineering in 2011, received the NSF CAREER Award in 2013, the LAS Diversity Award in 2013, the LAS Early Achievement in Research Faculty Award in 2014, and the Midwest Stanley C. Israel Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences in 2014.
