Collaborative Transformation

The goal of the ISU ADVANCE Institutional Transformation program is to increase recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty workforce in STEM fields. The Collaborative Transformation (CT) Project is a central component of the overall program. "The CT Project is designed to "mirror back" to faculty within each department aspects of their own departmental structures, cultures and practices that influence how positive their climate is and how effective the department's recruitment, retention and promotion practices are" (Bird and Debinski 2008; Bird and Hamrick 2008).

In March 2008, the CT investigators produced the Collaborative Transformation Project's First Round Focal Department Synthesis Report. The findings in the report "are based on intensive research conducted within the first round of three STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) departments at ISU during 2006-2007. The report also reviews some of the activities within the departments aimed at enhancing workplace climate and improving recruitment, retention and promotion of diverse faculty that have been inspired and informed by the CT Project" (Bird and Debinski 2008, p.iii).

During Fall 2008, the second round of Focal Departments began participating in the research component of the CT project.

Also during Fall 2008, the CT investigators and first round Focal Department ADVANCE Professors (see list below) produced a report (Enhancing Departmental Cultures, Practices and Structures: First Round Focal Department Updates, Fall 2008). This report summarizes key initiatives implemented within the first round Focal Departments thus far, as well as an overview of the initiatives deemed most crucial by first round Department Chairs and ADVANCE Professors to the enhancement of their own departmental structures, cultures and practices (report available below).

The First Round Focal Department Synthesis Report, the Executive Summary of the report, and slides from the presentation of the report, and the First Round Focal Department Updates (Fall 2008) report are available below.
