Bio

Dr. Sara Marcketti is Assistant Provost, Executive Director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), and Morrill Professor in the department of apparel, events, and hospitality management.

In her role as executive director, Marcketti provides leadership in meeting CELT's mission to support, promote, and enhance teaching effectiveness and student learning at Iowa State. The units of Iowa State Online, Instructor Development, and Course Design and Quality provide support, consultation, and service to faculty across their career trajectory.

Marcketti has served as a faculty member at Iowa State University since 2005. Previously, she was CELT’s Associate Director of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), (2013-2017) and Director (2017-2023). As a professor, Marcketti taught Textiles, Survey of Historic Costume, Fashion Show Production, and Creative Thinking and Problem Solving.

Her research interests include the scholarship of teaching and learning, apparel industry history, and creative thinking development. Published books include co-authorship of Survey of Historic Costume (6th and 7th editions), Textiles (12th edition), Knock it off: A History of Design Piracy in the U.S. Ready-to-Wear Apparel Industry, and the edited compilation The Dangers of Fashion: Towards ethical and sustainable solutions. Marcketti is Fellow of the Costume Society of America and former President of the Iowa Family and Consumer Sciences Association and Costume Society of America.

Marcketti earned an A.B. in art history and an M.S. in textiles, merchandising, and interiors from the University of Georgia and a doctoral degree in apparel, merchandising, and design with a minor in higher education from Iowa State University. Her teaching and research efforts have been recognized through college, university, and national awards including the Women Impacting ISU Calendar honor (2024), Fellow Online Learning, P3 EDU (2023), Iowa State University Outstanding ISU Alumni Award (2018), ITAA Teaching Excellence Award (2018), and Pacesetter Award from the University of Georgia (2011).
