Awards Available:

ISU Award for Achievement in Economic Development in Iowa

Purpose: To recognize faculty and staff members for outstanding Iowa State-based achievements in advancing the economic development of the state of Iowa.

Eligibility: Individuals or teams of nine (9)- or twelve (12)-month faculty members and/or Professional and Scientific staff who have made an economic development contribution at Iowa State. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony. Faculty and staff may only receive this award one time.

Nature of the award: $2,500 one-time stipend, to be shared in the case of joint awards

Number of awards: Two (2) awards possible, for an individual staff or faculty member, or for a team. 

Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding contribution to the economic development of the State of Iowa. Evidence of this contribution will include starting companies that have employed Iowa residents or had a significant positive impact on Iowa residents or providing specific documented support to Iowa companies that have resulted in economic gains for that firm.

Guidelines for submitting nominations for Economic Development in Iowa Awards

  1. Completed nomination cover page either for faculty or staff:

  2. Nomination statement of no more than three (3) pages that includes the following:
    • How the nominee's qualifications relate to the award criteria and why the nominee is deserving of the award
    • Specific examples and metrics that demonstrate nominee's accomplishments
    • Focus on the impacts of the nominee's economic development work
  3. Updated curriculum vita of no more than twenty-five (25) pages 
  4. Three (3) letters of support from experts in the nominee's field, either internal to Iowa State or external, who can speak to the nominee's work and impacts; include a 100-word biography of the expert and explain their relationship to the nominee
  5. Submit nomination as follows:
    • If an individual or employing unit would like to submit a nomination, please email the complete nomination document in a single PDF to award-isu-aaedi@iastate.edu. The nominations will be housed in a confidential file and the nominator will receive notification of successful submission within 10-15 minutes.
    • If a college would like to submit a nomination through the college award nomination process, nominators must submit their nominations to their college by the college deadline; when the college is ready to submit their nominations, the college awards coordinator must upload the nominations to the appropriate college folder on CyBox; if you do not have access to your college's folder on CyBox, please contact Rachel Haynes, rhaynes@iastate.edu.

Nominations originate in departments/schools, units, or centers and are due in the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost on February 10. Nominations are reviewed by the Office of Economic Development and Industry Relations, who make recommendations to the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost. Award recipients and their nominator, department chair/school director, dean, or supervisor are notified by May 1. Colleges receive feedback on unsuccessful nominations by July 1.

ISU Award for Achievement in Intellectual Property

Purpose: To recognize faculty and staff members for outstanding Iowa State-based achievements in producing intellectual property.

Eligibility: Individuals or teams of nine (9)- or twelve (12)-month faculty members and/or Professional and Scientific staff who have made important Intellectual Property (IP) contributions at Iowa State, preferably leading to patents and licenses. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony. Faculty and staff may only receive this award one time.

Nature of the award: $2,500 one-time stipend, to be shared in the case of joint awards

Number of Awards: One (1). 

Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding contribution to the development of patentable discoveries. The significance of this intellectual property will be demonstrated by its being licensed and used by industries both within and outside of the state of Iowa. The success of this IP and the significance of the licensing should in part be documented by the resources that this IP returns to the university. For some IP, such as open source software that can not be patented or licensed, the nomination should demonstrate substantial national impact.
